About the event
Event 4/6 of the Festival of the Sun king: Music for the Sun King's Sleep Concert
Hex was formed in 2022 and had its inaugural performance at Brixworth Music Festival. The group was set up to explore the otherworldly sounds of violas da gamba with continuo. Inspired by the associations between the viola da gamba and voice the group works on the historical practice of vocal transcriptions to bring in lesser performed composers into their concerts. Naturally at home in the French baroque, the group aims to win this rarely performed music new fans with programmes that showcase the beauty and expressivity of this repertoire.
Escape teh cares and stress of running the country with an intimate cocnert inspired by the musicians of the king's private chamber. In an age where only the aristocracy could afford to choose the music they listened to, we explore the private side to this graneur. Elegant suites from the royal lutenist Robert de Visée (guitar teacher to Louis XI) are twinned with lullabies by Julie Pinel. We explore delicate sommeils, sleep scenes from operas and calm works by Marais written for the king's private delectation. One could say this is the private sleep playlist specially curated by the king himself and you are invited to listen.
This festival is made possible by a generous grant by the Continuo Foundation.
This event is available to attend in person and to watch live online.
