About the event
The Society of Recorder Players/Moeck Solo Recorder Competition was established in 1985 after a suggestion from Moeck, along with an ensemble competition sponsored by Schott which ran until 1989.
The competition’s first winners were Piers Adams and Helen Rees, with the prize being a recital at the prestigious Wigmore Hall.
Since then, the competition has seen a lot of fantastic recorder players amongst its finalists; Erik Bosgraaf, Dorothee Oberlinger and Tabea Debus, to name but a few.
We have also been fortunate to have many distinguished musicians sit on our judging panel such as Dan Laurin and Daniel Brüggen. In recent years it has been a pleasure to welcome back previous winners and finalists to help nurture the next generation of players.
In 1991, the competition was moved to the autumn to coincide with what is now LIFEM and the organisation of the competition is now a collaboration between LIFEM, the SRP and Moeck, with part of the prize being a recital at the following year’s festival.
The competition attracts entries from all corners of the globe and is an important platform for players launching their professional careers. Many of the finalists and winners have gone on to have impressive careers as performers and teachers, not only in the UK, but across the world.
The competition takes place every two years and we are delighted to welcome Anna Stegmann, Jan van Hoecke and English cornet and Sackbut Ensemble’s sackbut player, Emily White to judge this year’s competition.
